Vicissitudes of Consciousness, Varieties of Correlates

چکیده
If, as Ned Block has argued, consciousness is a mongrel concept, then this collection resembles nothing so much as a visit to a dog pound, where one can hear all the varieties baying, at full volume. The experience is one of immersion in a voluminous excited cacophony, with much yipping and barking, some deep-throated growling, and other voices that can only be characterized as howling at the moon. What a time to be conscious! What a time to be conscious of being conscious! What Block meant by calling consciousness a “mongrel” is as follows:

Cultivated for ages in the Russian intellectual-cultural tradition and community consciousness questions about Russia and formulated within them the questions about the thought and work of F.M. Dostoyevsky remain often symptomatically integrally linked, even mutually co-assuming. As, programmatically assumed by the author of the article, the post-Kantian philosophical perspective illustrates an...
متن کاملVarieties of attention and of consciousness: evidence from neuropsychology
Do we need to attend to an object in order to be conscious of it, and are the objects of our attention necessarily part of our conscious experience? A tight link between attention and consciousness has often been assumed, but it has recently been questioned, on the basis of psychophysical evidence suggesting a double dissociation between top-down attention and consciousness. The present review ...
متن کاملAlva Noë and Evan Thompson Are There Neural Correlates of Consciousness ?
In the past decade, the notion of a neural correlate of consciousness (or NCC) has become a focal point for scientific research on consciousness (Metzinger, 2000a). A growing number of investigators believe that the first step toward a science of consciousness is to discover the neural correlates of consciousness. Indeed, Francis Crick has gone so far as to proclaim that ‘we ... need to discove...
متن کاملIdentifying neural correlates of consciousness: the state space approach.
This article sketches an idealized strategy for the identification of neural correlates of consciousness. The proposed strategy is based on a state space approach originating from the analysis of dynamical systems. The article then focuses on one constituent of consciousness, phenomenal awareness. Several rudimentary requirements for the identification of neural correlates of phenomenal awarene...
متن کاملThe Search for Neural Correlates of Consciousness
The science of consciousness begins with the search for the neural correlates of consciousness. I explain this notion and give examples of research in the field. I then discuss how different conceptions of consciousness may influence the search for the neural correlates. This includes the distinctions between access and phenomenal consciousness, and between conscious states and unified consciou...
